Washwood Heath is an inner-city area in the east of Birmingham, about three miles from the city centre. The population of the ward is around 28,000. The area has been shaped by heavy industry, particularly the Metro-Cammell railway carriage works, which produced rolling stock for railways worldwide from the 1920s. The Washwood Heath depot and works remain significant; Alstom now operates a facility here, and the site has been associated with HS2 rolling stock construction. Before industrialisation, the area was open heathland, as the name suggests.
Washwood Heath has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in Birmingham, with a large South Asian community, particularly of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage. Washwood Heath Road is the main commercial street, lined with shops, takeaways, and businesses reflecting this community. Ward End Park, a large municipal park with a boating lake, lies to the east. Bus services connect to Birmingham city centre. The A47 runs through the area. Adderley Park railway station, on the edge of the ward, has services to Birmingham New Street. Adult companionship in Birmingham falls under English criminal law.
