Shipley is a town in the City of Bradford metropolitan district in West Yorkshire, about three miles north of Bradford city centre and ten miles west of Leeds. The population is around 30,000. The town sits at the confluence of Bradford Beck and the River Aire, where the Leeds and Liverpool Canal also passes through. Saltaire, immediately to the north, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Titus Salt built his model village and Salts Mill between 1851 and 1876 to house workers from his alpaca and mohair textile mill, which was the largest industrial building in the world when completed. Salts Mill now houses the 1853 Gallery, with the largest permanent collection of David Hockney's work. Hockney grew up in Bradford and has a long association with the area.
Shipley station is on the Airedale Line, with regular services to Bradford Forster Square in about seven minutes and Leeds in roughly 20 minutes. The A650 runs through, connecting Bradford and Keighley. Shipley Glen Tramway, a cable-hauled funicular dating from 1895, climbs the hillside above the town to the moorland of Baildon Moor and Shipley Glen. For those considering adult companionship in the Bradford and Airedale area, Shipley's rail connections to both Bradford and Leeds, along with easy road access to the wider West Yorkshire region, make it well positioned.
