Tyldesley: Former Cotton Town in the Wigan Borough of Greater Manchester
Tyldesley (pronounced "Tilzley" locally) is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, around nine miles west of Manchester. The population is roughly 16,000. Cotton weaving and coal mining built the town in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The last pit, Astley Green Colliery, closed in 1970; its headgear and engine house survive as a museum, preserving the largest winding engine in Lancashire. The Tyldesley loopline, once a busy railway, closed under the Beeching cuts and is now a walking and cycling path.
Elliott Street forms the main commercial thoroughfare, with a mix of independent shops and chains. St George's Church, built in 1825, is the town's parish church. The Guided Busway, a rapid transit route along the former railway alignment, connects Tyldesley to Leigh and Manchester with limited stops. The A577 runs east to Manchester.
