Droylsden: Tameside Town on the Ashton Canal Between Manchester and the Pennine Fringe
Droylsden sits in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester, about four miles east of Manchester city centre. The population is around 23,000. The town grew through cotton manufacturing and hat making in the 19th century. The Ashton Canal runs through the centre, connecting to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Ashton-under-Lyne. The Snipe Retail Park on the A662 and the Droylsden Marina, a modern development along the canal, are more recent additions. The town is essentially a product of industrial Manchester's expansion eastward, without a medieval core or a grand civic centre, but it retains a community identity separate from its larger neighbours.
The Metrolink tram stops at Droylsden, with services to Manchester city centre in about 15 minutes and eastward to Ashton-under-Lyne. The A662 Ashton New Road is the main road connection to Manchester. The M60 is accessible at junction 23 via Audenshaw.
