The population is approximately 22,000. The town was a cotton spinning centre in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with several large mills. Most of the mills have been demolished or converted, though some buildings remain. Royton Hall, a 16th-century manor house, was demolished in the 1930s but the site is now Royton Park. The town has a working-class character and a strong local identity within the Oldham borough.
The commercial centre along Rochdale Road has local shops and services. There is no railway station in Royton; the nearest Metrolink stop is at Shaw and Crompton, about a mile to the north, on the Oldham and Rochdale line with trams to Manchester city centre. The M62 is accessible via junction 21 to the north, and the A663 Broadway runs south toward Oldham and Manchester.
