Borough of Bury: Black Pudding, Markets and the Irwell Valley
Bury Market is the reason most people outside Greater Manchester have heard of Bury. Open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, it sprawls across an indoor hall and outdoor stalls selling everything from fabric remnants to the black puddings that have made the town famous. The Bury Black Pudding Company and Chadwick's Original have been in competition for decades over whose recipe is definitive. No consensus has been reached. None is expected.
The town sits north of Manchester along the Irwell Valley, connected to the city centre by the Metrolink tram — the Bury line was one of the first to open in 1992, built on the old heavy rail alignment. Bury itself has a compact centre with the church, market, and shopping precincts clustered together. The Gallipoli Gardens on the Rock (Bury's main commercial street) commemorate the Lancashire Fusiliers, whose regimental museum was housed in Bury Castle until its closure.
The borough includes Ramsbottom to the north — a small town that has reinvented itself with independent shops, craft breweries, and the East Lancashire Railway heritage line running steam trains through the valley. Tottington, Radcliffe, Whitefield, and Prestwich round out the borough. The Peel Monument on Holcombe Hill above Ramsbottom honours Robert Peel, born in Bury, who founded the Metropolitan Police and served twice as Prime Minister. The walk up Holcombe Hill on a clear day gives views across Manchester to the Peak District.
