Craigavon was designated as a new town in 1965, intended to link the existing towns of Lurgan and Portadown into a single urban area of 100,000 people. The plan only partially succeeded. The central area between the two towns received some development, including the Craigavon Area Hospital and Rushmere Shopping Centre, but the population never reached the target. The Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon borough has a population of around 214,000, with the Craigavon urban area at approximately 65,000. Lough Neagh, the largest lake in the British Isles, lies immediately to the north.
The M1 motorway connects Craigavon to Belfast (twenty-five miles northeast). The area has a significant food processing sector, with several major employers along the Carn Industrial Estate. For adult companionship, the legal position in Craigavon is identical to every other part of Northern Ireland and fundamentally different from the rest of the United Kingdom.
