Wrexham: Football, Industry, and the Largest Town in North Wales
Wrexham's name recognition changed overnight. The purchase of Wrexham AFC by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, and the subsequent documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, turned a town of 65,000 people into an unlikely global talking point. The Racecourse Ground, the oldest international football stadium still in use, suddenly attracted attention from audiences who had never heard of the place. But Wrexham existed long before Hollywood arrived, and its character runs deeper than a football story.
The town has been the commercial centre of northeast Wales for centuries. Its position near the English border — Chester is thirteen miles away — gives it a dual orientation, pulling trade and commuters from both directions. The Wrexham Industrial Estate, one of the largest in Europe at over 500 acres, hosts employers ranging from food manufacturing to pharmaceutical production. The former Brymbo steelworks, which closed in 1990, has been partially redeveloped, and the site's industrial archaeology — including a fossil forest discovered during demolition — adds an unexpected layer to the town's story.
St Giles' Church in the town centre, with its fifteenth-century tower, is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales (a traditional rhyme rather than an official designation). Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the main acute hospital for north Wales and employs thousands. The town's nightlife, concentrated around the High Street and surrounding lanes, serves a catchment that includes surrounding villages, the university (Wrexham Glyndwr University), and cross-border visitors from Shropshire and Cheshire. Yale University takes its name from the Yale family of Plas yn Iâl near Wrexham — Elihu Yale, the institution's benefactor, is buried in St Giles' churchyard.
